Immi what? Immigration?

A controversial topic of illegal immigration, here in Texas, raises fists and eyebrows alike. Whether the immigrants have green cards or not, whether they legally stepped in to Texas soil or hopped the border, immigration has become a problem with benefits. Immigrants have helped the Texas economy by providing cheap labor. Although, due to the tremendous amounts of immigrants being classified as the “working poor,” it is draining tax money that the citizens of Texas have to pay. Commonly, the tax money that is used is for healthcare. Many bills have been proposed to deal with the problem of illegal immigration. Some of the bills would include things that would restrict certain services to illegal immigrants as well as bills that would harshly punish businesses that would employ illegal immigrants. Some of the bills that were proposed would include: denying birthright citizenship to babies that are born of parents that are “illegal.” Also a bill that would deny tuition benefits to “illegal” children and would require them to pay a higher tuition fee.

Many complain about how “those illegal immigrants are taking our jobs” but really, they’re doing the jobs that we personally won’t do. It is very hard to fully support the idea of illegal immigration, but it’s also something that is hard to prevent. Statistically, there are many benefits that some may overlook, though; some can argue that illegal immigration causes nothing but trouble “and money is coming out of our pockets for nothing.” Also, a sense of morality sets in. Seeing how most, if not all, of the illegal immigrants are working for dirt paying salaries brings about a sense of pity. Some can also argue that due to the large amounts of influence from the immigrants, some fear that Texas would one day completely lose its culture.

  2. After reading over my classmate Albert's post, I realized I had to respond to an issue close to home.

When it comes to immigration, I believe it's no different from all walks of life. Treat others how you want to be treated. In Mexico, it's a federal offense to illegally enter the country. So why should it be otherwise here in the US? I have nothing against immigrants, because I have friends who I hold dear to my heart who legally entered this country. It's a matter of whether you can justify the ends to the means.

Is it reasonable that a country's second largest income is cash flow from it's neighbor country? No. Not ever. Place two other neighboring countries in the world in that position, one of them being a major global force, and it won't work.

It's time for us to help the Mexican government stand up to do it's own job. And it's time for us to hold our government accountable for companies taking the cheap route. You have to remember, they come from a country where they make less than what they make here. Therefore, even if we think it's dirt cheap, to them you have no idea what it means. They risk their lives to get here. Obviously there's some kind of gold at the end of this rainbow.

Illegal immigration is wrong. If you owned land, and found out in the corner of your lot I had built a house and was using your utilities secretly, you'd be upset. Apply that in a grander picture, and it's even worse. Remember, the end does not justify the means.

  3. As I read Albert's post about illegal aliens in Texas, I, too agree that supporting or preventing illegal immigrants is a difficult issue to solve. Albert nailed it on the spot that although the immigrants are "stealing" jobs, but it would be the jobs that no one would really look forward to. Someone has to do it right? So why not employ the desperate for a cheap price. The bills that are being presented that allow illegal aliens, but "punishes" them is a great approach to it. Trying to prevent and deport all the illegal immigrants would end up causing Texas to spend even more money. Also, the idea of denying the illegal aliens wouldn't be a gurantee success due to major loopholes. The immigrants comes in by the thousands each day, so deporting them all of the illegals is hard if thousands are going to come flooding in again. Although I don't fully give up on the idea of prevention because it would still help cut down the numbers, but I wouldn't focus too much on the idea. Beside, I love my illegal immigrants. They make good orange chicken.

  4. My fellow classmate has an very interesting argument about the issue of immigration. Our Government is dealing with the immigration issue for more than two to three decade. As I read Albert's post about illegal aliens in Texas, I, too agree that supporting or preventing illegal immigrants is a difficult issue to solve. The more than $4.7 billion in costs incurred by Texas taxpayers annually result from outlays in the Education, Health care, Incarceration. The bills that are being presented that allow illegal aliens, but "punishes" them is a great approach to it. Trying to prevent and deport all the illegal immigrants would end up causing Texas to spend even more money. The solution I think might work will be like giving illegal immigrant a green card of some kind of status where they can pay taxes, that’s what we need and secure the border so than no more illegal immigrant would able to come in this country. As more and more people will apply for citizenship, revenue will increase and by no time we will see this problem getting to disappear and revenue will flow.
